Job Overview
The Senior Insurance Underwriting Manager will lead the underwriting function for AXA’s operations in South Sudan, focusing on commercial lines, property, casualty, and specialty insurance products. Reporting directly to the Regional Director, the role involves developing underwriting guidelines, assessing risk exposures, pricing policies, and collaborating with sales and actuarial teams to achieve growth targets. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement underwriting policies and procedures aligned with AXA’s global standards and local regulatory frameworks.
- Evaluate complex risk proposals, conduct thorough risk assessments, and determine appropriate pricing and terms.
- Lead a team of underwriters, providing coaching, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities.
- Collaborate with the sales team to identify market opportunities, design tailored insurance solutions, and achieve premium growth targets.
- Maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and reinsurance partners to facilitate smooth policy issuance and renewal processes.
- Monitor portfolio performance, analyze loss ratios, and implement corrective actions to improve profitability.
- Ensure compliance with South Sudan’s insurance regulations, reporting requirements, and internal audit standards.
- Prepare regular underwriting reports for senior management, highlighting key risk trends and strategic recommendations.
- Participate in product development initiatives, contributing market insights and risk expertise.
- Represent AXA at industry conferences, seminars, and networking events to enhance brand visibility.
Required Skills
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to assess complex risk scenarios.
- In‑depth knowledge of commercial, property, casualty, and specialty insurance products.
- Proficiency in underwriting software and data analytics tools.
- Excellent negotiation and communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Leadership experience with a proven track record of managing high‑performing teams.
- Strategic thinking and the ability to align underwriting practices with business objectives.
- Understanding of reinsurance structures and treaty negotiations.
- Fluency in English; knowledge of Arabic or local languages is an advantage.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related discipline is required. A master’s degree or professional certifications such as Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) qualifications, CPCU, or ARM are highly desirable and will be considered an asset during the selection process.
Experience
The ideal candidate will have at least ten years of progressive underwriting experience, with a minimum of five years in a senior or managerial capacity. Experience in emerging markets, particularly within Africa, is strongly preferred. Demonstrated success in portfolio management, risk assessment, and profitability improvement is essential.
Salary
AXA offers a competitive salary range of SSP 30,000,000 to SSP 45,000,000 per annum, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The compensation package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, pension contributions, and other benefits aligned with AXA’s global standards.
