In South Sudan, CHPI works closely with tribal elders and cultural practitioners to preserve the rich heritage of Nuer, Dinka, and other ethnic groups threatened by conflict and climate change.

Job Overview

This position will lead the digitization and preservation of South Sudan’s cultural heritage through advanced 3D scanning, audio-visual documentation, and metadata management. The role involves collaborating with local communities to create interactive digital archives accessible to scholars, educators, and descendants. Candidates will help develop mobile-friendly platforms to share cultural artifacts and traditional knowledge globally while ensuring ethical data stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead field expeditions to document cultural artifacts, oral histories, and traditional practices
  • Utilize photogrammetry and 3D modeling software to create digital replicas of heritage sites
  • Develop metadata standards for cultural assets following UNESCO guidelines
  • Train local community members in basic digital documentation techniques
  • Collaborate with IT teams to build secure cloud-based archival systems
  • Produce educational content for digital exhibitions and virtual museums

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and 3D modeling software (Blender, SketchUp)
  • Experience with digital asset management systems (Damion, CollectiveAccess)
  • Strong understanding of cultural sensitivity and ethical documentation practices
  • Fluency in English and at least one South Sudanese local language
  • Excellent project management and cross-cultural communication skills
  • Ability to work in remote field conditions with limited infrastructure

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Digital Archiving, Cultural Heritage Management, or related field
  • Master’s degree preferred but not required

Experience

  • 3-5 years in cultural heritage digitization projects
  • Previous experience in Sub-Saharan Africa is an asset

Salary

500,000 – 800,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience
