Job Overview

The Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) will lead Shell’s sustainability agenda in South Sudan, overseeing the development and execution of strategies that integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into all business functions. Reporting directly to the Regional Managing Director, the CSO will collaborate with senior leadership, government agencies, NGOs, and local communities to ensure compliance with international standards and national regulations. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability strategy aligned with Shell’s global ESG framework and South Sudan’s national development plans.
  • Lead cross‑functional teams to integrate sustainability metrics into operational, financial, and strategic decision‑making processes.
  • Monitor, report, and verify environmental performance data, ensuring transparency and compliance with local and international regulations.
  • Engage with government bodies, community leaders, and civil society to promote collaborative initiatives that enhance environmental protection and social welfare.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities for renewable energy projects, carbon reduction, and circular economy practices within the region.
  • Oversee sustainability risk assessments, mitigation plans, and emergency response protocols related to environmental incidents.
  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, fostering a culture of responsibility and ethical conduct across the organization.

Required Skills

  • Strategic thinking with a proven ability to translate sustainability concepts into actionable business plans.
  • Strong leadership and stakeholder management skills, capable of influencing senior executives and external partners.
  • Expertise in ESG reporting standards such as GRI, SASB, and TCFD.
  • Excellent analytical abilities, with proficiency in data visualization and sustainability performance tools.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex ideas to diverse audiences.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of Arabic or local languages is an advantage.

Education

A Master’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Energy Management, or a related discipline is required. Advanced certifications such as LEED AP, ISO 14001 Lead Auditor, or equivalent are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of ten years of progressive experience in sustainability leadership, preferably within the energy sector or large multinational corporations. Demonstrated success in managing ESG programs, leading cross‑functional initiatives, and delivering measurable sustainability outcomes is essential.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from SSP 150,000,000 to SSP 250,000,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health benefits, and a comprehensive expatriate allowance where applicable.
