Job Overview

This role is a cornerstone of the BBC World Service’s technical operations in South Sudan. The Senior Broadcast Engineer will lead the design, installation, maintenance and optimisation of transmission systems, studio equipment and digital delivery platforms. Working closely with editorial, production and IT teams, you will guarantee that all broadcast outputs meet the highest standards of reliability, audio quality and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, install, and maintain FM transmitters, satellite uplinks, and internet streaming infrastructure.
• Conduct regular technical audits, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting to minimise downtime.
• Lead upgrade projects for studio audio consoles, video routing, and digital playout systems.
• Ensure compliance with national broadcasting regulations and international technical standards.
• Collaborate with editorial teams to support live broadcasts, emergency alerts and special programming.
• Manage relationships with equipment suppliers, service contractors and local authorities.
• Develop and maintain detailed technical documentation, schematics and operational procedures.
• Mentor and train junior engineering staff and local technicians.
• Monitor signal quality, perform spectrum analysis and optimise transmission parameters.
• Provide technical support for mobile reporting units and field journalists.

Required Skills

• Extensive experience with RF engineering, broadcast transmitters and satellite communications.
• Proficiency in audio engineering, digital audio workstations and broadcast automation software.
• Strong knowledge of IP‑based media delivery, streaming protocols and CDN integration.
• Ability to read and interpret technical schematics, wiring diagrams and regulatory guidelines.
• Excellent problem‑solving skills and the capacity to work under pressure during live events.
• Effective communication and teamwork abilities, with experience training non‑technical staff.
• Project management experience, including budgeting, scheduling and stakeholder coordination.
• Familiarity with safety standards, electrical codes and environmental considerations.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Broadcast Engineering, Telecommunications or a closely related discipline is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Broadcast Engineer (CBE) or equivalent are highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of eight (8) years of progressive experience in broadcast engineering, preferably within a multinational media organisation or a high‑capacity transmission environment. Demonstrated experience managing complex technical projects and leading engineering teams is essential.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive annual salary ranging from 30,000,000 to 45,000,000 SSP, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based incentives, health insurance, and pension contributions in line with BBC World Service policies.
