Job Overview

The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will lead the conceptualization, detailed design, and validation of heavy‑duty equipment tailored for mining, construction, and agricultural applications in South Sudan. Reporting to the Regional Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for translating customer requirements into robust, cost‑effective designs, ensuring compliance with international standards and local regulations. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the end‑to‑end mechanical design process for heavy equipment, from concept sketches to detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, material selection, and stress analysis using advanced simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation).
  • Coordinate with customers, field engineers, and local dealers to gather requirements and provide technical support throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Develop and maintain design documentation, specifications, and Bill of Materials (BOM) in accordance with Caterpillar’s engineering standards.
  • Perform design reviews, risk assessments, and failure mode analysis to ensure product reliability and safety.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize designs for cost‑effective production and assembly in regional facilities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance to multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Stay abreast of emerging technologies, industry trends, and regulatory changes affecting heavy machinery design.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, CATIA, or Autodesk Inventor) and CAE analysis tools.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, hydraulics, powertrain, and structural dynamics.
  • Excellent problem‑solving abilities and a data‑driven approach to design optimization.
  • Effective communication skills for interfacing with clients, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Project management experience, including schedule and budget control.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment and adapt to challenging field conditions.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required. A Master’s degree or professional certifications (e.g., PE, PMP) are highly desirable and demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development.

Experience

Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical design of heavy equipment, preferably within the construction, mining, or agricultural sectors. Prior experience working on international projects or in emerging markets is a strong advantage.

Salary

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary ranging from SSP 30,000,000 to SSP 45,000,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. A performance‑based bonus structure and expatriate allowances may also be offered.
