Job Overview

This role is part of UNDP South Sudan’s initiative to advance sustainable urban development in underserved regions. The Sustainable Urban Development Specialist will lead projects that integrate green infrastructure, affordable housing, and community-driven planning to address urbanization challenges. The position requires expertise in balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship while ensuring inclusive development for all demographics.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement urban planning strategies that prioritize sustainability, climate adaptation, and social equity.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for green building projects, renewable energy integration, and waste management systems.
  • Collaborate with local municipalities to develop zoning policies and land-use frameworks.
  • Engage communities through participatory workshops to gather input on urban development priorities.
  • Monitor and evaluate project impacts using data-driven tools to ensure alignment with SDGs.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in urban planning, environmental policy, or sustainable development projects.
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping software and urban design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp).
  • Strong analytical skills for assessing urban ecosystems and identifying intervention opportunities.
  • Excellent communication and cross-cultural collaboration abilities.
  • Knowledge of South Sudan’s urban development challenges and regional context.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Geography, or related field.
  • Master’s Degree preferred but not mandatory.

Experience

  • 3-5 years of professional experience in urban development, environmental sustainability, or related sectors.
  • Previous project management experience in South Sudan or neighboring regions is advantageous.

Salary

150,000 – 200,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
